| Insurance
|
We recommend that
you travel to Greece with holiday insurance. To comply with
the terms of most insurance policies you will need to bring a
completed E1 11 form with you (obtainable from your local
Post Office) as only emergency treatments is available. If you are
ill in Greece then the the doctors/hospital will want to ensure they
will be paid before you can receive treatment. |
| Mosquitos
and other insects |
.....the insect
most likely to bother you on your holidays is the mosquito...especially
on the first few days of your holidays when your skin is
nice and white and juicy ! It is recommended that you buy a spray
or cream to keep them away and use a plug in tablet machine at
home to ensure that you have a buzz free night. |
| Plumbing |
In most bathrooms
in villas and apartments and also around and about you will
see that a basket or pedal bin is provided in the loo for the
disposal of toilet paper as the waste pipes are not big enough to
take paper of any variety. |
| Saint's
Days and Festivals |
The Virgn Mary - Panagia
- 15th August According to tradition, 11 years after Jesus Christ's death and His ascension , on August 15 he sent Archangel Michael from hearven to announce to the Virgin Mary that after three days she would be near to Him and her death is commemorated on this date - this day is celebrated all over Greece, not just in Zante and is marked by celebrations of all kinds. St Dionysios - 17th December St Dionysios was born in Zante in 1547 and is the patron saint of the island. He was formerly archbishop of Zante and lived on the island until his death on December 17tth 1624 - his memory is honoured on December 17th each year. |
| Siesta |
A very important
part of the Greek day. Daily life starts early in Greece especially
in the summer months to get work done before the heat of midday.
Work generally finishes around 1 pm and many shops close to
allow families to eat at home and for a siesta from 2pm until
5 or 6 pm when the shops open, usually until about 10 pm. |
| Sweets |
Available all over Zante
is the locally produced pasteli (made with sesame
seeds) and nougat - you can't go home without some ! |
| Water |
Unlike many Greek
Islands Zante does not have a water problem and so you should never
run out. All water is solar heated and as long as the days
are sunny and bright you should not find the need to use the electric
immersion heater - but it is there just in case for back up. As
far as drinking tap water is concerned it is safe to do so but you
might find it preferable to drink bottled water. |
Wine
|
You can buy it
in bottles, or much cheaper in tavernas to buy it by the kilo
- it comes in a little copper pouring jug or glass carafe - red
, white, rose or resinated. You can also visit the local winery
Callinico near Kypseli and buy your own (bottled or in larger demi-johns
!) |
