Dionysios Solomos 1798 - 1857
Born in Zante and educated in Italy from the age of ten where he studied law. He returned in later life to Zante where he concentrated on poetry and the Greek language. In 1823 he wrote Hymn to Liberty (which became the Greek National Anthem) and in later years Ode to Byron. In 1828 he went to Corfu where he remained until his death in 1828.
