Dionysios Solomou

Zante Town/Strani Hill

A statue of the island poet Dionysios Solomos stands in Solomou Square in Zante Town. A further statue of the poet is found at Strani Hill approximately 1.5 km outside Zante Town on the way in from Tsilivi in the district of Akrotiri.  It is a beautiful wooded place with a fantastic view. It was here on one of his favourite walks in May 1823 that the poet Dionysios Solomos wrote the “Hymn to Liberty” that later became Greece’s National Anthem.
